How to play Merge Tiles

The board is a 4×4 grid. Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in that direction, and a new 2 or 4 appears in an empty cell. When two tiles with the same number collide they merge into one tile with their sum. Keep merging to build bigger numbers and try to make the 2048 tile; you can keep going after that. The game ends when the board is full and no move can merge anything. New Game starts over; your best score is kept.

Controls

Keyboard

Arrow keys slide all tiles; W A S D or H J K L also work. Click New Game (or Try again) to restart.

Touch

Swipe up, down, left or right on the board to slide the tiles. Tap New Game to restart.

Tips for Merge Tiles

  • Pick a corner and keep your biggest tile in it.
  • Favour two directions (for example down and left) and use a third only when you must.
  • Avoid the move that pulls your biggest tile out of its corner.
  • Merge small tiles early so the board does not fill up.

FAQ

What is Merge Tiles?

Our hosted copy of 2048, the open-source sliding-tile number puzzle by Gabriele Cirulli et al. It is used under the MIT licence and credited on this page; it is not an official version.

Why is it called Merge Tiles here?

"2048" is a registered trademark of another company for game software, so we use a plain descriptive name for our copy and credit the original game and its authors.

Did you change the game?

No game logic was changed. We removed the web font, icons and outbound links, replaced the original's 'official version' note with an unofficial-copy note, and adjusted the page layout to fit the play bay. The full list is in the licence box.

Is my best score saved?

Yes. The best score and the current game are kept in localStorage on the game's own web address, in your browser only. There are no cookies and no account.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Swipe on the board to slide the tiles.

Who made it and what is the licence?

Gabriele Cirulli and contributors made the original, released under the MIT licence (Copyright (c) 2014 Gabriele Cirulli). The licence box on this page links the licence text at the exact source commit we use.
